Rapid 12-Minute EV Charging Clean Electric Unveils Breakthrough – E-Vehicleinfo

Clean Electric, an Indian battery technology innovator, has unveiled a rapid-charging battery capable of fully charging electric vehicles (EVs) in under 12 minutes. This is a significant leap from the typical 1-2 hour charging times currently standard in the industry. The breakthrough promises convenience and a potentially widespread impact on the EV industry.

“This is a revolutionary moment for all of us at Clean Electric, our proprietary 12-minute charging technology sets a new global standard that will drive the EV industry forward. Committed to sustainability, we strive to democratize RAPID Charging for EVs coupled with long battery life, reducing environmental impact and shaping the future of electric vehicles,” Ankit Joshi, Chief Product Officer at Clean Electric said.

“Clean Electric plans to introduce Gen 3 batteries next fiscal year, enabling affordable, high-energy-density batteries to take rapid charging to the masses,” he added.

Testing and Reliability

According to co-founder Akash Gupta, the company’s fireproof batteries have undergone extensive testing, completing 3700 rapid charge cycles with only an 11% degradation in the overall range. This highlights the durability and reliability of the technology. Clean Electric manufactures these batteries at its Pune facility, which can produce up to 1200 battery packs per month.

Funding and Support

Last year, Clean Electric raised $2.2 million (approximately Rs 18 crore) in a funding round led by Kalaari Capital. Other participants included Climate Angels, LV Fund, 7Square Ventures, and CIIE Regional Innovation Foundation. This financial backing has been crucial in driving the development and commercialization of their technology.

Innovative Technologies

The company has been developing this technology for four years, backed by four domestic and US-granted patents.

The battery architectures include several industry-first technologies:

  • Direct Contact Liquid Cooling (DCLC) for e-4W and large battery systems
  • Self-Contained Adaptive Active Liquid Cooling (SCALC) for e-2W and e-3W battery systems
  • DCLC with Integrated Cell-to-Pack (CTP) architecture

These innovations ensure safe batteries, mitigate thermal runaway risk and enable rapid charging with higher packaging efficiency, thus boosting EV range without added degradation.

Industry Collaboration

Clean Electric is collaborating with various EV OEMs in sectors like e-cars, e-2W, e-3W, and e-LCVs, as well as established startups. This collaboration aims to address major roadblocks and facilitate mass adoption of EVs.

Recently, Clean Electric conducted a live demonstration in Pune, showcasing their 2.2 kWh e-2W battery and 12.5 kWh e-3W battery. Both batteries charged from 0-80% state of charge (SOC) in just 10 minutes at a constant 5C charge rate using BIS-approved Type 6, Bharat DC-001, and globally accepted CCS 2 DC public chargers. This demonstration positioned their product as the world’s fastest-charging production electric vehicle battery.

Vision for the Future

Akash Gupta emphasized integrating “Design in India” into the “Make in India” initiative. He envisions India becoming a global technology powerhouse, setting a successful scalable model for other countries to follow. Clean Electric’s innovative solutions aim to pave the way for a sustainable and efficient future in the EV industry.
