US Pedestrian Fatalities Increase in First Half of 2022, According to New Projection

The United States is facing a concerning trend in pedestrian fatalities. According to a new projection, pedestrian fatalities in the first half of 2022 are expected to increase by 6.5 percent compared to the same period in 2021. This alarming statistic is a reminder of the need for greater safety measures to protect pedestrians on our nation’s roads.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that in 2021, 6,590 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in the United States. This number is expected to increase to 6,988 in the first half of 2022. The NHTSA notes that this increase is due to a variety of factors, including an increase in vehicle miles traveled, more distracted driving, and a lack of safe infrastructure for pedestrians.

The increase in pedestrian fatalities is particularly concerning given that pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users. Pedestrians are at risk of serious injury or death when struck by a vehicle, and they are also more likely to be involved in a crash than other road users. It is essential that we take steps to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities and ensure that our roads are safe for everyone.

One way to reduce pedestrian fatalities is to invest in infrastructure that is designed with pedestrians in mind. This includes installing sidewalks and crosswalks, improving lighting, and adding speed bumps or other traffic calming measures. Additionally, cities should consider implementing Vision Zero programs, which aim to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries through a combination of engineering, education, and enforcement.

It is also important for drivers to be aware of their surroundings and take extra care when driving near pedestrians. Drivers should always obey the speed limit and be prepared to stop if necessary. They should also avoid distractions such as texting or talking on the phone while driving.

Finally, pedestrians should take steps to stay safe while walking near roads. This includes wearing bright clothing at night, crossing at designated crosswalks, and staying alert for oncoming traffic.

The increase in pedestrian fatalities is a reminder of the need for greater safety measures to protect pedestrians on our nation’s roads. We must work together to ensure that our roads are safe for everyone by investing in infrastructure improvements, educating drivers and pedestrians about safety, and taking steps to reduce distractions while driving. Only then can we hope to reduce the number of pedestrian fatalities and make our roads safer for everyone.
