The Paradoxical Cooling Effect of Methane Despite Its Heating Properties

Methane is a greenhouse gas that is known to contribute to global warming. It is produced by various natural and human activities, such as the decomposition of organic matter, livestock farming, and fossil fuel extraction. Methane has a warming effect on the Earth’s atmosphere, trapping heat and causing temperatures to rise. However, recent studies have shown that methane also has a paradoxical cooling effect despite its heating properties.

Methane reacts with hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the atmosphere, which results in the formation of water vapor and carbon dioxide.
