One in Four Mortgaged Homes in Auckland Face Risk of 1-in-100 Year Floods

A recent study has revealed that one in four mortgaged homes in Auckland, New Zealand, face the risk of a 1-in-100 year flood. This is a concerning statistic for homeowners in the area, as flooding can cause significant damage to properties and disrupt daily life.

The study, conducted by CoreLogic, analyzed data from the Auckland Council’s flood maps and combined it with information on property ownership and mortgages. The results showed that approximately 80,000 mortgaged homes in Auckland are at risk of flooding, with a total value of around $60 billion.

The risk of flooding is highest in areas close to rivers and coastal regions, where rising sea levels and heavy rainfall can cause water levels to rise rapidly. The study also found that many of the homes at risk are located in low-lying areas, which are more susceptible to flooding.

The consequences of flooding can be devastating for homeowners. Floodwaters can damage property and possessions, cause structural damage to buildings, and create health hazards due to contaminated water. In addition, flooding can disrupt daily life, forcing people to evacuate their homes and causing significant stress and inconvenience.

To mitigate the risk of flooding, homeowners can take several steps to protect their properties. These include installing flood barriers or sandbags, elevating electrical systems and appliances, and ensuring that drainage systems are functioning properly. Homeowners can also purchase flood insurance to help cover the costs of any damage caused by flooding.

Local authorities also have a role to play in reducing the risk of flooding. This includes investing in infrastructure such as flood barriers and drainage systems, as well as implementing zoning regulations to prevent development in high-risk areas.

Overall, the study highlights the importance of being aware of the risks of flooding and taking steps to protect homes and properties. By working together, homeowners and local authorities can help reduce the impact of floods and ensure that communities are more resilient in the face of natural disasters.
