New Biden rule increases real-world mileage standard for new vehicles to 38 mpg by 2031

New Biden rule increases real-world mileage standard for new vehicles to 38 mpg by 2031

In a move aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change, the Biden administration has announced a new rule that will increase the real-world mileage standard for new vehicles to 38 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2031. This marks a significant increase from the current standard of 24 mpg, which was set by the Trump administration.

The new rule, which was unveiled by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Transportation, is part of President Biden’s broader efforts to address the climate crisis and transition to a clean energy economy. By setting a higher mileage standard for new vehicles, the administration hopes to encourage automakers to produce more fuel-efficient cars and reduce the overall carbon footprint of the transportation sector.

According to the EPA, the new rule will result in significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, with an estimated 2.2 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide being avoided over the lifetime of vehicles sold between 2023 and 2031. This is equivalent to taking more than 450 million cars off the road for a year.

In addition to reducing emissions, the new rule is also expected to save consumers money at the pump. By driving more fuel-efficient vehicles, consumers will spend less on gasoline over the lifetime of their cars, resulting in an estimated $140 billion in savings by 2031.

While the new rule has been met with praise from environmental advocates and public health experts, it has faced pushback from some automakers and industry groups. Critics argue that the higher mileage standard will increase the cost of new vehicles and limit consumer choice, potentially hurting sales and impacting jobs in the auto industry.

Despite these concerns, the Biden administration remains committed to implementing the new rule and believes that it will ultimately benefit both the environment and the economy. By setting a higher mileage standard for new vehicles, the administration hopes to drive innovation in the auto industry and accelerate the transition to cleaner, more sustainable transportation options.

Overall, the new rule represents a significant step forward in the fight against climate change and demonstrates President Biden’s commitment to taking bold action to protect the planet for future generations. As we look towards a cleaner, more sustainable future, increasing the real-world mileage standard for new vehicles to 38 mpg by 2031 is a crucial step in reducing emissions and building a more resilient and sustainable transportation system.
