NB Power and ARC collaborate on advancing Small Modular Reactor technology

NB Power, the primary electric utility in New Brunswick, Canada, has recently announced a collaboration with Advanced Reactor Concepts (ARC) to advance Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology. This partnership marks a significant step forward in the development of clean and sustainable energy solutions for the province and beyond.

SMRs are a promising new form of nuclear power technology that offer several advantages over traditional large-scale nuclear reactors. These smaller, more flexible reactors can be built in a factory and transported to their final location, reducing construction time and costs. They also have enhanced safety features and can be easily scaled up or down to meet varying energy demands.

The collaboration between NB Power and ARC will focus on the development and deployment of ARC’s ARC-100 SMR technology. This innovative design is based on a sodium-cooled fast reactor concept, which offers high efficiency and potential for recycling nuclear waste. The ARC-100 is also designed to be inherently safe, with passive cooling systems that can shut down the reactor in the event of an emergency.
