Introducing The Pegasus Guidelines: A New Standard for Emissions Measurement and Reporting in the Aviation Sector, Launched by RMI and 5 Global Banks

The aviation industry is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for approximately 2-3% of global emissions. In an effort to address this issue, the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) has partnered with five global banks to launch the Pegasus Guidelines, a new standard for emissions measurement and reporting in the aviation sector.

The Pegasus Guidelines aim to provide a consistent and transparent framework for measuring and reporting greenhouse gas emissions from aviation activities. This will enable airlines, airports, and other stakeholders in the aviation industry to accurately track their emissions, set reduction targets, and monitor progress towards achieving those targets.

The guidelines cover a wide range of emissions sources within the aviation sector, including aircraft operations, ground handling, and airport infrastructure. They also take into account the full lifecycle of emissions, from fuel production to end use.

One of the key features of the Pegasus Guidelines is their alignment with existing international standards, such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the International Civil Aviation Organization’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). This ensures that companies using the guidelines will be able to easily integrate their emissions data with other reporting frameworks.

The five global banks that have partnered with RMI to launch the Pegasus Guidelines are committed to supporting their clients in implementing the guidelines and improving their environmental performance. By adopting these guidelines, companies in the aviation sector can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and transparency, which can help attract investors and customers who are increasingly concerned about climate change.

Overall, the Pegasus Guidelines represent a significant step forward in the aviation industry’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact. By providing a standardized framework for measuring and reporting emissions, the guidelines will help companies in the sector to better understand their environmental footprint and take meaningful action to reduce it. With the support of RMI and the global banks, the aviation industry is poised to make significant progress towards a more sustainable future.
