The Carbon Brief Report, released on September 21, 2021, has revealed that almost 50% of current climate pledges made by countries around the world allow for continued fossil fuel extraction. The Carbon Brief Report found that out of the 191 NDCs submitted by countries, 93 of them allow for continued fossil fuel extraction. This means that these countries are not taking sufficient action to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and transition to renewable energy sources.
The report also found that the countries with the highest levels of fossil fuel production and consumption, such as the United States, Russia, and China, have made some of the weakest climate pledges.
