“An Interview with CEO Laurel Hurd on the 50th Anniversary of Interface”

Interface, a global leader in sustainable flooring solutions, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. To mark this milestone, CEO Laurel Hurd sat down for an interview to reflect on the company’s journey and its commitment to sustainability.

Hurd, who has been with Interface for over 20 years, spoke about the company’s founder, Ray Anderson, and his vision for a sustainable future. Anderson’s epiphany came in 1994 when he read “The Ecology of Commerce” by Paul Hawken, which challenged businesses to rethink their impact on the environment. Anderson realized that Interface, a carpet tile manufacturer, was contributing to environmental degradation and decided to make a change.

Under Anderson’s leadership, Interface set a bold goal of becoming a “restorative enterprise” by 2020. This meant eliminating all negative impacts on the environment while creating a positive impact through its products and operations. Hurd explained that this goal was not just a marketing ploy but a genuine commitment to sustainability.

Interface’s journey towards sustainability has not been easy. Hurd acknowledged that the company faced challenges such as finding sustainable materials and changing its manufacturing processes. However, she emphasized that these challenges were opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

One of Interface’s most significant achievements is its carbon-neutral status. The company achieved this by reducing its greenhouse gas emissions through energy-efficient manufacturing processes and sourcing renewable energy. Any remaining emissions are offset through investments in renewable energy projects such as wind farms.

Hurd also spoke about Interface’s product innovations, such as its modular carpet tiles that can be easily replaced or recycled. The company’s products are designed with sustainability in mind, using recycled materials and reducing waste.

Interface’s commitment to sustainability has not gone unnoticed. The company has received numerous awards and recognition for its efforts, including being named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere Institute for 14 consecutive years.

Looking towards the future, Hurd emphasized that Interface’s commitment to sustainability is unwavering. The company has set new goals, such as achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and becoming a carbon-negative company by 2040. Hurd also spoke about the importance of collaboration and partnerships in achieving these goals.

In conclusion, Interface’s 50th anniversary is a testament to its commitment to sustainability and innovation. Hurd’s interview highlighted the company’s journey towards becoming a restorative enterprise and its continued efforts to create a positive impact on the environment. As we face the challenges of climate change, Interface serves as an inspiration for businesses to rethink their impact on the environment and take action towards a sustainable future.
