A Trial of Triple Electric Road Train: Testing the Feasibility and Efficiency of Three-Part Electric Trains on the Road

Electric vehicles have been gaining popularity in recent years as a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. However, the use of electric vehicles for long-haul transportation has been limited due to the range limitations of current battery technology. To address this issue, researchers have been exploring the use of electric road trains, which are essentially a series of connected electric vehicles that can travel together on the road.

Recently, a trial of triple electric road trains was conducted in Sweden to test the feasibility and efficiency of using three-part electric trains on the road. The trial was conducted by the Swedish Transport Administration and involved three electric trucks from Scania, each pulling a trailer. The three trucks were connected electronically and driven by a single driver in the lead truck.

The trial was conducted on a 2-kilometer stretch of road in Gävle, Sweden, and involved transporting goods from a logistics center to a port. The triple electric road train was able to transport a total of 60 tons of cargo, which is equivalent to the load capacity of a traditional diesel truck.

The results of the trial were promising, with the triple electric road train proving to be both feasible and efficient. The road train was able to maintain a speed of 85 kilometers per hour, which is the maximum speed limit for heavy vehicles in Sweden. The road train also consumed significantly less energy than three separate electric trucks would have consumed if they were driven individually.

One of the key advantages of using electric road trains is that they can help to reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality. According to Scania, the triple electric road train used in the trial produced 90% less carbon dioxide emissions than a traditional diesel truck would have produced.

Another advantage of using electric road trains is that they can help to reduce traffic congestion on the roads. By connecting multiple vehicles together, electric road trains can transport more goods with fewer vehicles, which can help to reduce the number of trucks on the road and ease traffic congestion.

Overall, the trial of triple electric road trains in Sweden was a success, demonstrating the feasibility and efficiency of using three-part electric trains on the road. While there are still some challenges to overcome, such as the need for more charging infrastructure and the high cost of electric vehicles, electric road trains have the potential to revolutionize long-haul transportation and help to create a more sustainable and efficient transportation system.
