ENERPARC AG, a Hamburg-based developer and operator, officially unveiled the Zeithain solar park, boasting an impressive 87.1 MWp capacity spread across approximately 95 hectares. The inauguration ceremony, attended by Saxony’s Minister of State for Energy, Climate Protection, Environment, and Agriculture, Wolfram Günther, Zeithain Mayor Dr. Mirko Pollmer, and other local representatives, marked a significant milestone in the region’s renewable energy landscape.

Constructed in nine phases spanning from 2016 to 2024, the Zeithain solar park stands out not only for its size but also for its unique location on the historic Old Camp, a former military site utilized for nearly 150 years. Prior to development, ENERPARC conducted extensive exploratory measures and munitions clearance operations. Today, the solar plant generates enough solar power to meet the annual demand of approximately 25,000 households while simultaneously aiding in the remediation of contaminated sites, thereby safeguarding the nearby drinking water conservation area.

To integrate the solar power into the grid, ENERPARC laid a 3.6 km cable route to Zeithain Neudorf and established its own substation for electricity conversion. Subsidiary Sunnic Lighthouse will oversee the trading of the solar power, ensuring efficient distribution and utilization.

Saxony’s Energy Minister, Wolfram Günther, hailed the Zeithain solar park as a vital contributor to the region’s energy transition, supplying green electricity to support energy-intensive industrial sectors. Moreover, the project demonstrates exemplary land use practices, repurposing a former military site for eco-friendly energy production and ecological enhancement.

In addition to energy production, ENERPARC has implemented various biodiversity measures to protect and promote wildlife in and around the solar park, resulting in a tangible increase in biodiversity, as confirmed by regular onsite monitoring.

Looking ahead, ENERPARC aims to explore green hydrogen production in the Meißen Industriebogen, an area characterized by numerous industrial companies, including those in steel and chemical sectors. ENERPARC CEO Stefan Müller announced plans for a hydrogen pilot project, leveraging the region’s high demand for hydrogen and ideal conditions for renewable energy production.

The company intends to develop another ground-mounted solar plant with a maximum output of 17 MWp, supplying solar power directly to the pilot electrolyzer for hydrogen production. Future plans also include the realization of additional solar parks in Zeithain and surrounding areas, further advancing Saxony’s renewable energy goals.
