Historical Data from the World’s Largest Oil, Gas, Coal, and Cement Producers: Carbon Majors

Carbon Majors refer to the world’s largest oil, gas, coal, and cement producers that have historically been responsible for a significant portion of global greenhouse gas emissions. These companies have played a major role in contributing to climate change through their extraction and production of fossil fuels, which release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere when burned.

Historical data from Carbon Majors provides valuable insights into the extent of their impact on the environment and the role they have played in driving climate change. By analyzing this data, researchers and policymakers can better understand the sources of greenhouse gas emissions and develop strategies to reduce them.

One of the most comprehensive studies on Carbon Majors was conducted by Richard Heede, a researcher at the Climate Accountability Institute. Heede’s research identified the top 100 producers of oil, natural gas, coal, and cement from 1854 to 2010, and estimated their cumulative greenhouse gas emissions during that period. The study found that just 100 companies were responsible for over 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions since the industrial revolution.

The data from Heede’s study highlights the disproportionate impact that a small number of companies have had on the environment. These Carbon Majors have not only profited from the extraction and production of fossil fuels, but have also contributed significantly to the warming of the planet and the resulting climate change.

In recent years, there has been increasing pressure on Carbon Majors to take responsibility for their role in driving climate change and to transition to more sustainable practices. Many of these companies have made commitments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, invest in renewable energy sources, and support efforts to mitigate climate change.

By examining historical data from Carbon Majors, researchers can track trends in greenhouse gas emissions, identify opportunities for reducing emissions, and hold companies accountable for their environmental impact. This information is crucial for informing policy decisions, guiding corporate sustainability efforts, and ultimately addressing the urgent challenge of climate change.
